Does Speck Candyshell Grip for iPad Mini live up to its reputation?

Does Speck Candyshell Grip for iPad Mini live up to its reputation?

One, these days, would assume that using the word “grip” in the title of a product would be some sort of horrible marketing gimmick or stint used to draw you in to buying it. However, the Speck CandyShell Grip is a certain exception to the rule – It really does grip!

The Speck CandyShell Grip Case is made of a soft inner centre and a hard outer shell. The smooth plastic shell is lined horizontally with rubber strips, which provide the impeccable grip. Whether your hands are sweaty or dry, they stick and stay glued, which is great for all of those butterfingers out there (yes, you), as well as gamers. For those who don’t fall under the mentioned categories, I find that even while carrying or holding your iPad, the gripping ridges really come in handy.

As for attaching and detaching the case, it’s incredibly easy and takes absolutely no time, which is a big tick in the convenience department. I love how the case doesn’t sporadically come off – once it’s snapped in it stays put. Some cases maybe are too floppy or too stiff and randomly detach themselves from their device – but the CandyShell Grip, to my liking, does not.

The Speck CandyShell Grip for iPad allows for full access to all of your ports and controls. So your rear camera, mute/orientation switch, microphone, heaphones port, and volume buttons and sleep/awake button will all be at the ready when needed.

I dare ask, though, whether it is possible to achieve such great durability without the annoying compromise of bulkiness? Surely in this modern era it is achievable? I understand that the soft inner and hard outer shell can’t be wafer thin. But can’t they make it just a tad skinner? The case seems really big and at times awkward to hold. Now it could be the small hands talking, but nonetheless, it is something that could be improved.

This case could be an absolute winner if it somehow incorporated a smart cover. I feel that with the CandyShell Grip, it’s all about the back of your iPad. But the front screen needs just as much, if not more, protection. It’s not particularly a big deal, I guess, but without it, it just seems to lack that extra measure of security for your device.

As for colours, the CandyShell Grip is available in four combinations – harbor/malachite (blue/green), black/white, red/pink and black/grey. It’s a fairly decent variety and provides you with pretty standard choices.

The Speck CandyShell Grip Case for the iPad Mini definitely lives up to its name. It’s protects well through it’s hard and soft, outer and inner, and the rubber strips allow for immaculate grip. It would be awesome if there was an added smart cover, and appreciated if it were a tad thinner. However, as I mentioned before, the CandyShell Grip Case does its job really well, and for those looking for a case with superb grip, you honestly could not go past this one.
