Wireless Earbuds for iPhone 7?

The “rumour” that Apple will be doing away with the traditional 3.5mm jack for audio has pretty much been accepted by most as a given now, but has now had fuel added to the fire on Thursday, with a new report from Forbes claiming that Apple are designing a custom low-power Bluetooth chip to support wireless earbuds.

The challenge, if this product is indeed in development, is going to be the same issue faced by all accessory manufacturers: how to get the battery to last long enough to be worth having, whilst retaining a small enough design to be practical for everyday use.

The Forbes source claims that Apple has been working on the problem for “a few years” now however, and plan to solve it using tech developed in-house via Passif Semiconductor, a specialist in power efficient chipsets, acquired by the Cupertino company in 2013. Whilst Apple normally sources complex components like chipsets from manufacturers like Qualcomm, they do have a history of turning to their in-house engineers to create bespoke components. It’s a high cost, time intensive strategy, but one that results in a high-quality part that suits Apple’s exact needs (their A-series power chips being a good example).

PS we’re pegging the product name to be AirBuds. ;)
